This Sacrament used to be called Extreme Unction or ‘the last rites’ and was often reserved until someone was dying. After Vatican II Pope Saint Paul VI wisely made the Rite available “to all who need healing” and for Catholics of all ages. It uses the Holy Oil which was blessed by the Bishop in Holy Week to anoint the person on the forehead and hands, not only for physical healing but for mental and spiritual healing and it can be repeated as often as desired. All priests are ready to celebrate this Sacrament whenever they are asked, especially if someone is going into hospital for surgery.
